NYC Neighborhood Spotlight: DUMBO, Brooklyn (My 5 Favorite Spots)
A neighborhood teeming with unparalleled skyline views—here are the five spots I take all my friends.
I mentioned we spent Sunday in DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass), but it occurs to me that I haven’t done a proper DUMBO roundup for first-time visitors.
Anchored by the Brooklyn Bridge, DUMBO is easily one of the most photogenic spots in NYC. The neighborhood is compact, which makes it perfect for exploring at a relaxed pace—you can hit the highlights in just an afternoon. No need to rush—this is Brooklyn at its most scenic and strollable.

History of DUMBO
Once a gritty industrial area filled with warehouses and factories, DUMBO began its transformation in the late 20th century when artists and creatives moved in, drawn by spacious lofts and affordable rents. In the early 2000s, redevelopment efforts turned the neighborhood into a hub for tech startups, art galleries, and upscale living. Today, DUMBO attracts a trendy crowd in search of modern condos and jaw-dropping views.
5 Must-Do Activities in DUMBO
Ride Jane’s Carousel
Originally built in 1922, Jane’s Carousel is a beautifully restored carousel sitting in a glass pavilion by the water. Open rain or shine, tickets are just $3 per person. And yes, adults are welcome with or without kids!
With sweeping views of the Brooklyn Bridge and the East River, the ride blends nostalgia with unparalleled views. It’s an incredible experience with kids—but truth be told, I’ve ridden it on date nights sans kids and had just as much fun.
